Boost Your Store’s Conversions: E-Commerce CRO Checklist


If your D2C store gets steady traffic but sales still feel harder than they should, the problem is rarely your product. It’s usually one of a handful of friction points sitting quietly between “add to cart” and “order confirmed.”

This checklist is built to work as a self-audit. Go through each item against your live store — not your staging site, not your mockups — and mark what’s missing. What you’re left with is a prioritised fix list you can either work through yourself or hand directly to a developer or agency that builds ecommerce websites.

No invented case-study numbers here, no “10x your revenue overnight” claims. Just 15 fixes grounded in how shoppers actually behave, and why each one earns its place on the list.

Fixing why shoppers are abandoning your checkout

Checkout is where intent turns into revenue — and where most D2C stores quietly lose the sale they already won. A shopper who reaches checkout has decided to buy. Every extra field, surprise cost, or confusing step from that point on is a reason for them to change their mind.

1. Offer a guest checkout option

Never force account creation before a shopper can complete their purchase. Requiring sign-up first adds a decision point at exactly the moment a shopper wants to move fast. Let people check out as a guest, then invite account creation after the order is placed — when they have less reason to bail.

2. Show the total cost before the final step

Display shipping, taxes, and any fees on the cart page, not the last screen of checkout. Unexpected costs at the final step are one of the most common reasons carts get abandoned. If a shopper has already mentally committed to a price and it changes right before payment, that jump reads as a small betrayal — even when the fee is standard and fair.

Why your checkout has too many steps

1. Support multiple, region-appropriate payment methods

Give shoppers more than one way to pay, including options they already trust. A store that only accepts card payments is asking every shopper without a card, or without confidence in entering one, to give up. For Indian D2C stores, that typically means UPI, major wallets, and card payments at minimum, with buy-now-pay-later as a strong addition for higher-ticket items.

2. Cut checkout down to essential steps only

Reduce checkout to the fewest fields and pages that still let you fulfil the order correctly. Every additional field is a small tax on attention. Ask yourself, field by field, whether you’d actually stop shipping the order if it were missing. If the answer is no, remove it.

Essential trust signals to add to your product page

A first-time shopper on an unfamiliar D2C site is making a bet: that the product will arrive, match the photos, and be replaceable if it doesn’t. Trust signals are how you shorten the distance between “this looks nice” and “I believe this store will deliver.”

5. Add visible security badges near the payment button

Place recognisable payment and security badges close to where the shopper enters their card details. This is less about the badge itself and more about timing — reassurance needs to appear at the exact moment doubt is most likely to surface, which is right before someone hands over payment information.

6. Show real customer reviews, including photos

Display genuine customer reviews on the product page, weighted toward ones that include photos. Text-only reviews are useful, but a photo from an actual buyer does something a star rating can’t: it shows the product in a real setting, on a real person, in real lighting. That’s hard to fake and easy to trust.

7. Make your return and refund policy easy to find

Put a clear, plain-language return policy link on the product page itself, not buried three clicks deep in the footer. Shoppers weigh purchase risk before they weigh product appeal. A visible, easy-to-understand return policy lowers that risk without you having to discount anything.

8. Display verifiable trust markers

Show trust markers a shopper can actually verify, such as business registration details, a real support contact, or third-party certifications relevant to your category. Vague claims like “quality guaranteed” don’t move anyone. Specific, checkable details do.

Is your store fast enough? Mobile performance fixes that convert

Most D2C traffic in India now arrives on mobile, often on inconsistent networks. A store that feels fine on your office Wi-Fi and a fast laptop can feel broken on a mid-range phone with patchy 4G. Performance isn’t a technical nice-to-have here — it’s a direct revenue lever, and it’s usually where a custom development team earns its keep fastest.

9. Fix mobile page speed and Core Web Vitals

Get your Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Interaction to Next Paint into healthy ranges on real mobile devices, not just desktop. A slow-loading hero image or a layout that jumps while someone is trying to tap “add to cart” doesn’t just annoy shoppers — it actively causes mis-taps and abandoned sessions. Test with Google’s PageSpeed Insights on your actual product pages, not just your homepage.

10. Design checkout for thumbs, not cursors

Size buttons, form fields, and tap targets for one-handed mobile use, with enough spacing to prevent mis-taps. A checkout that was clearly designed and tested on desktop first tends to have cramped fields, tiny checkboxes, and dropdowns that are painful to use on a touchscreen. If your team primarily reviews the store on laptops, this gap is easy to miss internally and impossible for mobile shoppers to miss.

11. Compress and lazy-load product images

Serve appropriately compressed, modern-format images and load below-the-fold images only as the shopper scrolls to them. Large, uncompressed product photography is one of the most common causes of slow load times on D2C stores, precisely because founders (understandably) want their products to look as good as possible. WebP or AVIF formats with proper compression solve most of this without a visible quality trade-off.

How to increase conversion rate on your D2C store: product page fixes

Once the technical and trust groundwork is in place, the product page itself needs to do its job: answer every question a shopper would otherwise message support to ask, before they think to ask it.

12. Use multi-angle, zoomable product photography

Show each product from at least four to six angles, with zoom enabled, including any texture, sizing, or scale details specific to the item. Online shoppers can’t touch the product, so photography is doing the job their hands would otherwise do. A single hero shot forces shoppers to imagine the parts you didn’t show — and imagination tends to work against conversion, not for it.

13. Write scannable, specific product descriptions

Structure descriptions with short paragraphs, bullet points for specs, and concrete details like materials, dimensions, and fit guidance rather than general adjectives. “Premium quality, made with care” tells a shopper nothing they can act on. “100% cotton, true to size, machine washable” answers a real question and reduces the odds of a return.

Making your store ready for AI shopping agents

Shoppers increasingly research products through AI assistants and search summaries before they ever land on your site — and in a growing number of cases, AI agents are doing parts of the shopping and comparison work directly. A store that isn’t structured for machine readability is invisible to that layer of discovery, regardless of how good the human-facing design is. This is a newer area of AI application development, and one most agencies haven’t caught up to yet.

14. Add JSON-LD product schema to every product page

Implement Product and Offer schema markup in JSON-LD format on every product page, including price, availability, and review data. This is the structured data that lets search engines and AI systems understand your price, stock status, and rating without having to guess from visual layout. Without it, your product can be technically live and still functionally unreadable to the systems now doing a growing share of product discovery.

15. Structure content so AI shopping agents can parse it accurately

Write product specs, sizing, shipping, and return information in clean, semantic HTML with consistent formatting across pages, and back it with FAQPage schema where relevant. AI agents summarising or comparing products pull from structured, unambiguous content far more reliably than from marketing copy wrapped around the actual facts. The same clarity that helps a rushed human shopper also helps an AI agent represent your product accurately elsewhere.

Turning this checklist into action

Go back through the summary table and mark each item as done, partially done, or missing. Most D2C stores land somewhere in the middle — a few trust signals in place, checkout still asking for too much, mobile performance untested on an actual phone. That’s normal, and it’s exactly what this checklist is designed to surface.

Some of these fixes are a few hours of work. Others — particularly checkout redesigns, Core Web Vitals fixes, and schema implementation — touch code and are worth getting right the first time rather than patching repeatedly.
